Did you know that the hotel in The Shining is based on The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado? Stephen King stayed there once (room #217), and was apparently inspired--though the movie wasn't shot there. Meanwhile, The Stanley Hotel shows the original, un-cut version of The Shining on continuous loop on Channel 42 on the guest T.Vs....Which means I need to go stay there...really soon.

really? but wasn't it shot at a lodge on mt. hood? we just watched this movie because i moderated the question "what was the best horror film of all time?" and "the shining" was in the top five--probably number one. other things that people ranked high--the exorcist, alien, the haunting and others i'm forgetting. anyhow, liked the shining but also found it flawed.
Hiya. It was inspire by the Stanley, but not shot there. I' love to know what the other top five were. The Alien films never really did it for me, somehow. I like the Exorcist, but find the possession parts a little too disturbing. The Shining definitely is flawed...the more I watch it, the more I see it...but I can still watch it endlessly, for some reason. I think it's the way it's shot...those long shots down the hallways, the sudden appearance of the creepy twins....and a lot of it, I think, has to do with just the King's spot-on ability to hone in on things that are inherently scary, i.e. it was a good idea.
